Green engineering solution for stabilising river and lake banks.

Chris Rabone Landscapes are working with the engineering company R G Parkins to design and implement a solution for stabalising an eroding lake bank in Selside near Kendal. It involves the use of hazel bundles (faggotts) to create a wall that can then be backfilled with material, this will reduce the amount of erosion and allow water loving plants to succesfully grow, there roots binding the soil together. This green engineering solution uses local sustainable materials and has much less impact and a lower cost than more commonly used engineering solutions such as gabions and concrete retaining walls. With last years flooding in Cumbria and the severe erosion it caused on the waterways, this is a solution that could be widely used to repair this damage.
