Garden maintenance tips for late autumn and winter

As the nights are drawing nearer and we have had the first frost of the year it is time to prepare the garden for the winter months ahead. These are a few of the jobs that our maintenance crew will be carrying out in the next few weeks.

Bulbs
Now is a good time to plant tulip bulbs. Plant as deep as possible, preferably up to 10cms for some varieties if you would like them to repeat flower in the following years.

Lawns
Mow lawns for a final cut before winter using raised mower blades, preferably after a dry spell if possible! Also remove any leaves and apply autumn fertilizer.

Perennials
Lift and divide perennials if the weather is suitable and tidy up borders by cutting back and clearing up dead herbaceous material ready for winter. Some plants can be left if they have ornamental qualities and look good with frost on them such as plants with interesting seed heads or strong structural form. Now is a good time to collect seeds and take hardwood cuttings.

Shrubs and trees
Order and buy bare rooted trees shrubs and roses. Plant if the weather is suitable, if not then temporarily heel them in.
